1:32 scale Tamiya Inc. North American F-51D Mustang Korean War

Verifizierter Kauf - von Marko Joensuu verfasst am 22.06.2020 15:06:26
This is Tamiya Inc. 1:32 Aircraft Series No 28 and Item Number 60328 1:32 scale North American F-51D kit. Tamiya #28 1:32 scale North American F-51D Mustang kit is based on the Tamiya's in-depth research of existing P-51s at the Midwest Aviation Museum, the Warhawk Air Museum and the Smitsonian Museum in the USA. Additionally, Tamiya has collaborated with the Boeing North American Inc. which is a part of The Boeing Company. As a side note, North American Aviation merged with Rockwell-Standard in 1967 and was later sold to Boeing in 1996. Today, the name of the North American Aviation Inc. is Boeing North American Inc. Tamiya has raised the bar on their 1:32 scale A/C kits over the last 5 decades. Tamiya's 1:32 scale F-14 started it in 1980 with the details and features not seen before right out of the box, but there were still some undesired details and features; later Tamiya has corrected those with further 1:32 scale F-14 releases in 1994 and 2003. The 1:32 scale F-4 Phantom II kits (1995-2004) were then released with the new technology molding that allowed e.g. Phantom's huge fuselage to be molded in one piece. Tamiya released their first 1:32 scale Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero in 2000, which was (and still is) a mind blowing kit; it was fully loaded with details and it also featured landing gear with sophisticated retraction mechanisms and other moving features. Later came other Zeros as well in 2001-2007 and quite likely there will be a new Zero coming, but only time will tell. In the end of day Tamiya's 1:32 scale A6M Zero kits are certainly easily the best A6M Zero kits in any scale. After Mitsubishi A6M Zeros, Tamiya released three1:32 Supermarine Spitfire kits in 2009-2011 and as with their Zeros each Spitfire featured the same level of engineering excellence. Even die-hard Spitfire fans couldn't find any fauls with Tamiya's Spitfires. Like Tamiya's 1:32 scale Mitsubishi A6M Zeros, Tamiya's 1:32 scale Spitfires hold the title of the best Spitfire kits in any scale. Therefore, there is a solid reason why Tamiya is called The Big T. Enter the 1:32 scale P-51 Mustangs. Before 1:32 scale Item Number 60328 North American F-51D Mustang Korean War kit release during this year 2020, Tamiya has already brought three 1:32 scale North American P-51D/K Mustang kits to market; namely Item Number 60322 North American P-51D Mustang (a new tool initial release) in 2011, Item Number 25151 North American P-51D Mustang Silver Color (a rebox, but Limited Edition Silver Color Plated with new decals) in 2012 and Item Number 60323 North American P-51D/K Mustang Pacific Theater (a rebox with updated/new parts and new decals) in 2012. Tamiya Inc.'s all 1:32 scale North American P-51D/K Mustang kits, Item Number 60322, Item Number 25151 Limited Edition Silver Color Plated and Item Number 60323, plus the new 1:32 scale North American F-51D Mustang Korean War kit, Item Number 60328, are produced under license of The Boeing Company. Tamiya #28 1:32 scale North American F-51D Mustang Korean War kit is packaged in a quite big box, on the top of which is a color print of the one aircraft provided with markings; F-51D called "Was That Too Fast". Inside the big box there is a smaller cardboard box. In this smaller cardboard box there are all the 27 clear parts including three canopies, two frets of photo-etched metal, 16 metal rods, 17 mini-magnets, 4 screws, 4 nuts, 2 rivets, eight poly caps, a screwdriver and two rubber tires. Four ultra thin molded special parts for the cowling are packaged in a special tray for protection on the top of already mentioned smaller cardboard box. Overall the kit has 469 light grey plastic, 27 clear and five black injection molded parts on 25 sprues, two frets of photo-etched metal (control surface hinges, scissor links, screens, belts, and so on...), two self-adhesive metallic name plates, pre-cut self-adhesive windscreen and canopy masking sheet,16 metal rods, 17 mini-magnets, 4 screws, 4 nuts, 2 rivets, eight poly caps, a screwdriver, two rubber tires and two decal sheets with markings for three Korean War F-51Ds. The length of the kit's fuselage is 308mm and the wingspan is 354mm. Overall number of parts, plastic and PE, is over 500. The parts are perfectly molded, accurately and well detailed. There are no molding or flash issues on the critical parts - very well done Tamiya. The high quality Tamiya decals cover three Korean War F-51Ds: - North American F-51D-20-NT Mustang, NAA No. NA-111, Serial No. 44-12943, "Buzz Number" FF-943, name "Was that too fast", 12th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing, USAF, Chinhae Airfield (K-10), South Korea, 1951. - North American F-51D-25-NA Mustang, NAA No. NA-122, Serial No. 44-73888, "Buzz Number" FF-888, name "Karin Ann", 39th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing, USAF, Chinhae Airfield (K-10), South Korea, 1951. This A/C was shot down by ground fire and lost on the 27th of April in 1952; pilot was killed. - North American F-51D-30-NA Mustang, NAA No. NA-122, Serial No. 44-74692, "Buzz Number" 18/K, name on the port side "By Faith I Fly" & on the starboard side "Last Chance", Colonel Dean Hess' A/C, 1st Fighter Squadron, 10th Fighter Group, RoKAF, Kangnung/Gangneung Airfield (K-18), South Korea, 1951. There are two sheets of decals and they include also a very nice maintenance stenciling set. The kit has virtually a complete interior, which includes full engine (a reproduction of Packard V-1650-7 featuring e.g. cylinder, crankcase, intercooler, supercharger and carburetor details), cockpit (a very nicely detailed with e.g. AN/ARC-3 radio, SCR-522 transmitter and BC-453-B receiver), internal fuel tank, oil tank, radio, radiator/oil cooler, guns (well detailed 12.7mm M2 MGs with ammo belts) and gun bays (with all needed details, e.g. feed chutes) and wheel wells (beautifully detailed). There are a vast array of options; engine access panels can be open or closed (magnet-attached), flight control surfaces are separate and positionable, canopy/windsreen can be open or closed and undercarriage is positionable. Kit includes a display stand to depict the plane in flight; as mentioned above, the undercarriage is positionable and by switching parts of the landing gear, it can be depict to be either lowered or retracted. Therefore, modelers can switch the A/C being on the ground or in flight as they want - a very nice feature. Let's walk through these features and options more closely. Tamiya's initial new tool release, 1:32 scale North American P-51D Mustang Item Number 60322 in 2011, already had following options and features: - A very well detailed Packard Merlin engine with two types of exhaust stacks. - Hamilton Standard propeller. - Lots of forward firewall details. - Magnet-attached removable top, bottom and sides cowling panels. - Early and late block instrument panels. - Early and late block pilots seats with different shoulder harnesses. - Optional seated pilot figure. - Optional standing pilot figure. - Early and late block gun sights. - Early and late block avionics. - Choice of three canopy types. - Sliding canopy. - Optional rear view mirror. - Movable radiator and oil cooler flap. - Movable rudder, with the use metal shafts and photo-etched parts. - Choice of early fabric or late metal ailerons and elevators. - Movable elevators, with the use metal shafts and photo-etched parts. - Movable ailerons, with the use metal shafts and photo-etched parts. - Movable flaps with the use of poly caps. - Correct main landing gear well design. - Beautifully detailed landing gear. - Landing gear can be raised or lowered with the use screws and magnets. - The tail wheel is attached with a magnet. - Detailed gun bays. - Gun bay doors can be open or closed. - The six wing machine guns feature individual parts for ammunition belts. - Choice of early or late block tail. - Choice of 108 gallon paper or 75 gallon metal drop tanks. - Optional display stand. - Canopy masks. - A16-page full color A5-size booklet packed with information and a dedicated four-language cover story. Tamiya's 1:32 scale North American F-51D Mustang Korean War Item Number 60328 kit has all these same options and features as Tamiya's 1:32 scale North American P-51D Mustang Item Number 60322 kit, except for the early block tail, i.e. sprue C with two parts of finless fuselage tail. Then what is new with the 1:32 scale North American F-51D Mustang Korean War Item Number 60328 kit? - Pilot's goggles in the sprue EE's. - Parts for six 5-inch HVAR rockets in the sprue CC. - Wider paddle blade propeller in the sprue DD. - SCR-522 or new AN/ARC-3 transceiver sets with BC-453B receiver in the sprue DD. - Dedicated cockpit parts for radio equipment (SCR-522, AN/ARC-3 & BC-453B) in the sprue DD. - Slitted fuselage side radiator access panel parts in the sprue DD. - New head parts featuring the P-1A helmet with oxygen mask used in the Korean war in the sprue DD. - Parts for two 500lbs/227kg bombs in the sprue AA. - Parts for two napalm bombs in the sprue AA. - Parts for two jury rigged aircraft mount long bozooka type triple-plastic tube 4.5 inch M10 cluster rocket launchers with 4.5 inch M8 type rockets inside the tubes in the sprue AA. - Name plate is new and better design. - New marking options for Korean War F-51Ds, two U.S. and one Korean. All in all, sprues A, B, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, Z and masking stickers plus 26 clear parts including three canopies, two frets of photo-etched metal, 16 metal rods, 17 mini-magnets, 4 screws, 4 nuts, 2 rivets, eight poly caps, a screwdriver and two rubber tires are the same with 1:32 scale North American P-51D Mustang Item Number 60322 and 1:32 scale North American F-51D Mustang Korean War Item Number 60328 kits. Sprues AA, CC, DD and EE plus new name plates and new decals are completely new to 1:32 scale North American F-51D Mustang Korean War Item Number 60328 kit. Furthermore, as already pointed out, 1:32 scale North American F-51D Mustang Korean War Item Number 60328 kit lacks sprue C (two parts of finless fuselage tail), which is included in 1:32 scale North American P-51D Mustang Item Number 60322. So these are the similarities and differences between two Tamiya 1:32 scale P-51D and F-51D kits. Tamiya's instruction book is great, very clear, well designed, printed in black and white and when paint, extra parts, or decals are required the callouts are very clear. As usual with Tamiya's instructions, these are very easy to follow. There are also very helpful sections that clearly display when and how to remove tabs from parts. Additionally, as already mentioned above, Tamiya has included A16-page full color A5-size documentation booklet of Mustang packed with information of history and facts. A full color double sided painting instructions sheet for all three marking options. Naturally Tamiya's1:32 scale Mustang kits have been compared to Volks/Zoukei-Mura's 1:32 Mustang kits. Some Mustang experts have claimed following differences between them: - Volks/Zoukei-Mura's 1:32 Mustang kits offer a bit more internal details, but some of these details are not very accurate and are oversimplefied. - Some of Tamiya's 1:32 Mustang kits' details are also oversimplefied, but generally more accurate than Volks/Zoukei-Mura's. - Tamiya's cockpit is more accurate and basically offers options for different production blocks. - In theory Tamiya' s Mustang kits allow modellers to build any P-51D (D-5 through D-30) built in Inglewood or Dallas. - Tamiya's Mustang kits have roughly 140-200 parts, PE included, more than Volks/Zoukei Mura's Mustang kits; note this new F-51D kit has more parts than any other Tamiya's Mustang kit. Thus, Tamiya's Mustangs have more options and hence, quite likely more details. - Volks/Zoukei Mura's Mustang kits are missing some surface details and some access panels seem to be in the wrong places. - Tamiya's Mustang kits have correct surface details with rivets. It should be noted that the rivets on the wings of Mustang were never puttied, but since rivets are flush, they will completely disappear under coats of primer and paint on the factory new Mustangs. Furthermore, only some panel lines were puttied on the wings. Additionally, Korean war F-51D Mustangs weren't puttied, hence rivets should be visible on the wings. - Tamiya's Mustang kits are shape wise a notch better than Volks/Zoukei-Mura's Mustang kits; e.g. cockpit, propellers, access panels, tail, radiator scoop & inlet, exhaust flaps and the position of engine. - Volks/Zoukei-Mura's 1:32 Mustang kits don't have any PE parts; this may be considered a future standard of kits - no PE parts as the molding technology gets better and better, PE parts aren't needed plus plastic parts are three dimensional versus two dimensional PE parts. On the other hand, some may not like the lacking of PE parts, as they feel that the use of PE parts will create better details. - Some of Volks/Zoukei-Mura's 1:32 Mustang kits' moldings can be very soft and uneven. - Some may not like Tamiya's idea of switching parts of the landing gear so that the A/C can be depict to be either lowered or retracted; i.e. the A/C being on the ground or in flight. On the other hand some love that feature (I simply love it myself). - The molding of Tamiya's 1:32 Mustang kits is better and the fit is near perfect. - Tamiya's 1:32 Mustang kits are produced under license of The Boeing Company (today the original North American Aviation Inc. is a part of The Boeing Company under the name of the Boeing North American Inc.) and offer options for the modeler to build different production blocks and thus are historically more accurate. - The concept between Volks/Zoukei-Mura's and Tamiya's 1:32 Mustang kits is different: Volks/Zoukei-Mura's concept is to replicate the building of the A/C following the actual production line steps and it builds quite a precise and detailed Mustang kit. Tamiya's concept is to build the exact finished replica of the real A/C using the superb engineering and fit and it builds a truly accurate, detailed and licensed Mustang kit. There may be even more differences between Volks/Zoukei-Mura's and Tamiya's 1:32 Mustang kits, but those differences seem to be minor ones according to Mustang experts. So, what's my personal opinion about Volks/Zoukei-Mura's and Tamiya's 1:32 Mustang kits. I do like Volks/Zoukei-Mura's concept to replicate the building of the A/Cs following the actual production line sequences and e.g. Volks/Zoukei-Mura's 1:32 scale SWS-06 Heinkel He 219 A-0 "Uhu", SWS-10 Dornier Do 335 A-0 "Pfeil" and SWS-11 Focke-Wulf Ta-152H-0 are excellent kits; quite likely new SWS-13 Kawasaki Ki-45 Kai Tei Type 2 Two-Seat Fighter "Toryu", SWS-14 Kawasaki Ki-45 Kai Ko/Hei "Toryu" and SWS-17 Henschel Hs 129 B-2 RIII are excellent kits too. However, not all Volks/Zoukei-Mura's 1:32 scale kits are excellent, as the engineering, fit, accuracy and overall quality are not consistent with all Volks/Zoukei-Mura's 1:32 scale kits. Therefore, there are excellent kits, as pointed above and then there are more or less flops. I do like Tamiya's concept to build the exact finished replica of the real A/C using the superb engineering and fit too. Tamiya's kits are always consistent with the excellent engineering, fit, accuracy and overall quality; you'll always know what you are going get without exceptions. Moreover, many Tamiya's kits are licensed by the original manufacturer of the original design, so that also works as an additional quarantee and warranty of the kits' overall quality. As pointed out already in the beginning, Tamiya has raised the bar on their 1:32 scale A/C kits over the last 5 decades; and none of their 1:32 scale A/C kits is a flop. Thus, while both kit manufacturers produce excellent 1:32 scale A/C kits and both kit manufacturers produce a very good 1:32 scale Mustang kits, I'm inclined to say that I prefer Tamiya's 1:32 scale Mustang kits over Volks/Zoukei-Mura's1:32 scale Mustang kits. I believe that Tamiya's 1:32 scale Mustang kits are a notch better; they are more accurate, better engineered, have better fit and have better overall quality. This does not mean that Volks/Zoukei-Mura's1:32 scale Mustang kits are bad, quite contrary, they are very good, but Tamiya's are a little better. However, if you prefer to build a Mustang kit skin off, so to speak, Volks/Zoukei-Mura's 1:32 scale Mustang kits are better for that. Nevertheless, in the end, both Volks/Zoukei-Mura's1:32 scale Mustang kits and Tamiya's 1:32 scale Mustang kits build pretty much the very same Mustang A/Cs; both manufacturers kits have better than average accuracy and fit, are reasonable complicated to build and have to be carefully assembled. Along with Volks/Zoukei-mura Inc.'s 1:32 scale Dornier Do 335 A-0 "Pfeil", Heinkel He 219 A-0 "Uhu" and Focke-Wulf Ta-152H-0, Hong Kong Models' 1:32 scale Avro Lancaster B Mk.I/Avro Lancaster "Dambuster" & Dornier Do 335 B-2 "Zerstörer"/Dornier Do 335 B-6 Night Fighter, Revell's 1:32 scale Messerschmitt Bf 110C-2/C-7 & Messerschmitt Me 262A-1/A-2/Messerschmitt Me 262B-1/U-1 & Junkers Ju-88A-1/Junkers Ju 88A-4, Cyber Hobby/Dragon's Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3/E-4/E-7 and Tamiya's own 1:32 scale Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero/ Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero & Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc/Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII/Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XVIe & De Havilland Mosquito FB Mk.VI kits, Tamiya's North American 1:32 P/F-51D/K Mustangs are for sure among the best 1:32 scale plastic A/C kits available currently. Finally, Tamiya Inc. made again an excellent research with the collaboration of The Boeing Company. Perhaps Tamiya's 1:32 scale P/F-51D/Ks are the ultimate plastic P/F-51D/K A/C kits ever produced. Tamiya's 1:32 scale F-51D is truly an outstanding and highly recommended kit and certainly a must kit for North American 1:32 P/F-51D/K Mustang fans and those modelers, who are interested in Korean War. Get one and build it. Thanks to my credit card/wallet as always and naturally Tamiya Inc. and a very good service from MBK for the kit review! PS As another side note, recommended reading for 1:32 scale (Tamiya) NA P/F-51D/K/H Mustang modelers: Malcolm V. Lowe's North American P-51 Mustang hardcover book published by The Crowood Press in 2009; simply the best single book ever written about the North American Aviation P/F-51A/B/C/D/K Mustangs. A must book for Mustang fans. Malcolm V. Lowe's The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang, A Comprehensive Guide, Part 1 Allison Powered (MDF 21) & Part 2 Merlin Powered (MDF 24), two volume softcover books published by SAM Publication Ltd in 2013 (MDF 21) and 2014 (MDF 24); probably the best books for P/F-51A/B/C/D/K/H modelers (taking into account the modeling perspective only). Cory Graff's P-51 Mustang, Seventy-Five Years of America's Most Famous Warbird hardcover book published by Zenith Press in 2015; best original photographs and advertisements of NA P/F-51D/K/H Mustangs. A must book for P/F-51D/K/H fans. Headquarters Army Air Forces' Pilot Training Manual For The P-51 Mustang AAF Manual 51-127-5 softcover book originally published by USAAF and North American Aviation in 1944 and reprinted by Periscope Film LLC in 2006-2009; the title says it all, it's pilot's manual. A must book for P/F-51D/K/H fans. Francis H. Dean's America's Hundred Thousand, U.S. Production Fighters of World War Two hardcover book published by Schiffer (Military/Aviation) Publishing Ltd in 1997; this is the bible book of the U.S. fighters in WWII and the very best book there is about the subject. An absolute must for every one interested in, not only Mustangs, but all U.S. fighters in WWII. And recommended reading for the Korean Air War 1950-1953: Robert F. Futrell's The United States Air Force In Korea 1950–1953 hardcover book published by Duell, Sloan and Pearce in 1961; this is the bible book of the USAF in the Korean War and probably the very best book there is about the subject. An absolute must for every one interested in, not only Mustangs, but the USAF in Korean War. Edited by Jacob Neufeld and George M. Watson, Jr., Coalition Air Warfare in the Korean War 1950–1953 paperback book published by U.S. Air Force History and Museums Program Washington, D.C. in 2005; the title pretty much says it all. A must book for those interested in air war in Korean War.
