It was designated on the battle plans as an important road junction that the Germans could use for quick counterattacks toward Utah and Omaha Beach.
It was therefore strategically important to immediately occupy the village and ensure its control by American airborne troops. In the early hours of June 6, 1944, paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Divisions, the two famous US airborne divisions, occupied the center of the small French town after fierce fighting.
The role of American paratroopers has been portrayed and celebrated in numerous films, from 1960's "The Longest Day" to more recent "war films."
