The Bismarck was a battleship of the German navy and, together with her sister ship Tirpitz, formed the Bismarck class.
At the time of her commissioning in August 1940 under the command of Kapitän zur See Ernst Lindemann, she was considered the largest and most powerful battleship in the world.
In May 1941, the Bismarck was sent to the North Atlantic together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen to engage in trade warfare.
Soon after the start of this mission, she succeeded in sinking the British battle cruiser Hood in the Denmark Strait.
Three days later she herself sank with most of her crew in the North Atlantic after a heavy engagement against units of the British Royal Navy.
