The project was initiated in the 1980s to replace the Italian Air Force's aging Fiat G-91Y fighter-bombers.
The Brazilian Air Force also had to replace its Italian-made MB-326 aircraft.
The AMX had an aerodynamic design characterized by a heavily swept wing and could reach a top speed of 1000 km/h with its Rolls-Royce Spey 807 engine.
The Italian version was armed with a 20 mm M61 cannon and could carry an offensive payload of 3800 kg. The two-seat version AMX-T was developed as an advanced training aircraft, but could also be used in combat missions as a ground attack and close support aircraft.
Italy acquired 26 AXM-Ts for the Italian Air Force.
