The Tornado emerged from a joint project between Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom to produce a multi-role, high performance fighter aircraft.
However, the main requirement was to develop a modern, state-of-the-art aircraft capable of carrying out low-altitude attack missions.
This need was met by developing a twin-engine fighter aircraft with a variable wing.
The Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike) was the first version to enter service with the British Royal Air Force, designated GR.1.
