The Junkers Ju87 Stuka was designed not only to inflict devastating strategic damage on opposing forces, but also to spread fear and confusion among their ranks, thereby further reducing their effectiveness as a fighting force.
A Stuka dive-bombing attack used a siren intentionally bolted to one of the aircraft's landing gear legs, emitting a terrifying scream that lasted until the aircraft ended its dive, only to be replaced by the sound of a bomb exploding.
The Stuka symbolized the impending devastation and was the aviation manifestation of the Blitzkrieg.
