The AH-1G Cobra was developed by the Bell Company as part of the programme to develop a special attack helicopter. It was first used in Vietnam in the autumn of 1967, where it demonstrated its high combat capabilities.
To engage ground targets, AH-1 helicopters used both built-in weapons - a six-barrel machine gun or grenade launcher - and suspended weapons: unguided rockets, machine gun pods and, later, a six-barrel 20mm gun.
Its firepower made it possible to engage armoured targets as well.
Over time, the AH-1 received a number of improvements, including measures to counter surface-to-air missiles with thermal guidance.
This involved cooling the engine exhaust gases, and a special pipe was also installed on the helicopters to divert the hot gases upwards, into the plane of rotation of the main rotor.
After the end of the Vietnam War, AH-1G Cobra helicopters continued to be used by units stationed in Western Europe.
