The AH-64, with a tandem crew consisting of the pilot in the rear cockpit and the co-pilot gunner (CPG) in the front cockpit, is the US Army's main attack helicopter. It is a fast-reacting, airborne weapon system that can fight close and deep to destroy, disrupt or delay enemy forces. The Apache was designed to fight and survive during the day, at night and in adverse weather conditions around the world. The Apache's primary task is to destroy high-value targets with the HELLFIRE missile, primarily enemy armor. It is also capable of employing a 30 mm M230 chain gun and the Hydra 70 (2.75-inch) family of missiles, which are lethal against a wide range of targets. The Apache carries a full complement of aircraft survivability equipment and is capable of withstanding hits from rounds up to 23 mm in critical areas. The AH-64 is air-transportable in the C-5, C-141 and C-17.
