The Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1 is undoubtedly one of the most significant aircraft in the history of aviation and was developed from the Hawker P.1127 experimental aircraft, which was designed to test the capabilities of V/STOL vectored thrust flight, the transition from hover to forward flight and back to hover.
The prospect of a viable V/STOL aircraft proved of great interest to both the British and US military, who funded further development of the aircraft. The new "jump jet" was an instant hit with the British public, who marvelled at the ingenuity of their aviation industry, once again the envy of the world.
Not restricted to operating from military airfields, Harriers could be hidden in forest clearings or scattered along stretches of motorway or even school playgrounds to conceal their location from the enemy.
