A total of 15 USAAF Pursuit/ Fighter groups (FG) flew the P-40 between 1941 and 1945.
The Battle of Imphal took place from March to July 1944 in the region around the city of Imphal, capital of the state of Manipur in northeastern India. Japanese armies attempted to crush Allied forces at Imphal and invade India but were driven back into Burma with heavy casualties. Along with the simultaneous Battle of Kohima by road, which relieved the encircled Allied forces at Imphal, the battle was the turning point of the Burma Campaign, part of the Southeast Asian theater of World War II. The Japanese defeat at Kohima and Imphal was the largest up to that point, with many of the Japanese deaths suffered from starvation, disease and exhaustion during their retreat
