The Ilyushin Il-2 Shuturmovik was the Soviet military's most capable ground attack aircraft of World War II. It was so important to the USSR's war effort that Joseph Stalin personally intervened to ensure a high production rate.
By the end of the war, over 36,000 were built, making it the most produced military aircraft in aviation history.
The aircraft featured armor integrated into the airframe, protecting vital areas such as the cockpit, engine, and fuel tank.
Production of the single-seat version of the Il-2 began in March 1941, but heavy losses led to the development of a two-seat version with a rear gunner.
In late 1943, a version with the outer wings swept back 15 degrees to provide a better center of gravity was introduced.
Together with the T-34 tank, the Il-2 contributed significantly to the Soviet victory.
