The I-16 Type 5 was the second production modification of the fighter aircraft designed by N.N. Polikarpov.
A more powerful M-25 engine was installed in a modified cowling with improved aerodynamics, which increased the speed to 450 km/h and made the I-16 the fastest production aircraft of its time.
During mass production in 1935-1938, more than 2200 aircraft were built.
Taking into account combat and operational experience, the I-16 Type 5 was improved during production by introducing reinforced wings, larger wheels and an oil cooler.
Due to problems with the closed cockpit, an open cockpit was introduced.
The I-16 Type 5 was widely used in the Spanish Civil War of 1936–39, the Sino-Japanese War of 1937–45, the Lake Khasan conflict of 1938, the Khalkhin-Gol conflict of 1939, and the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939–40.
The I-16 Type 5 participated in World War II mainly as a light attack aircraft until 1943, for which the armament was increased from four to six unguided 82 mm rocket launchers. .
