So in August 1941 the 489th Squadron was formed from pilots from the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).
DA's squadron received several Bristol Beaufort Mk.Is, which were used until the winter of 1942.

In the winter of 1942, two detachments were formed in the SAAF - the 36th and 37th Coastal Flight, to which these aircraft belonged.
