The well-armed single-engine low-wing aircraft, along with the Hawker Hurricane, formed the backbone of the Royal Air Force combat units deployed against the German Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire's success helped cement its status as a legendary aircraft. It was celebrated for its elliptical wing design and powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.
During the war, the Spitfire itself underwent constant refinements in its aerodynamic configuration and engine in response to the Luftwaffe's technological innovations which led to the development of the formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190.
The Spitfire Mk IX version could compete on par with the most advanced German fighters of the time and was produced in sufficient numbers to meet operational needs.
The Spitfire was also used intensively after the war - for example in French Indochina (Vietnam) or by the Israeli Air Force.
