It was designed to provide the British Army with a modern aircraft for reconnaissance, observation and artillery spotting.
With exceptional short takeoff and landing capabilities, the Lysander was exactly what the Army was looking for.
Unfortunately, many of the design requirements were already outdated.
Of the 175 Lysanders sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force, 118 were lost as the aircraft could not defend themselves against the Luftwaffe's fighters.
