From a student pilot's perspective, the de Havilland Tiger Moth was a relatively stable and forgiving aircraft that had few handling inadequacies and generally tolerated the odd silly mistake made by the novice pilot.
The Tiger Moth quickly gained a reputation for being an easy aircraft to fly.
These characteristics seemed to make them the ideal aircraft to serve as basic training for large numbers of pilots who would fly in action during World War II.
At the start of the war the RAF had around 500 Tiger Moths in service, but requested hundreds more from flying clubs across the country.
