The Ventura first saw service in Europe in late 1942 as a Roal Air Force bomber.
It was designated PV-1 by the United States Navy and saw service in the Pacific from 1943.
Since the PV-1 was equipped with radar, it often led B-24 bomber formations.
In late 1943, some PV-1s were used as night fighters with VMF(N)-531, a Marine Corps fighter squadron, in the Solomon Islands.
