It was the first Lockheed fighter to enter official service.
Variants of the P-38 were used during the Second World War and about 10000 were produced. Equipped with intercoolers under the engines, the P-38J Lightning produced 1450 hp at high altitude and a maximum of 1600 hp.
It had a longer range thanks to fuel tanks in the leading edges of the wingtips in addition to the main fuel tank.
