The last and most perfect biplane of the N. N. Polikarpov Design Bureau family was the I-153. It had a gull-shaped upper wing, retractable undercarriage and more powerful armament with four ShKAS machine guns. Production aircraft had M-62 radial engines, later series had more powerful M-63s.

The first flight took place in August 1938. A total of 3,437 aircraft were produced between 1939 and 1941. The German Luftwaffe used captured machines for its own purposes.
