The jet was a triumph for the British aviation industry and the heaviest aircraft ever used by the Royal Navy.
The introduction of the S.2 variant of the aircraft in late 1965 saw a significant increase in the Buccaneer's performance, but this was centred on the introduction of a new engine, the famous Rolls Royce Spey turbofan.
With more thrust and greater range, the Buccaneer S.2 was an even more capable naval fighter aircraft that must have struck fear into the hearts of any Soviet naval commander.
Thanks to its increased power, the S.2 could now land on its home carrier with one engine shut down if necessary, but still had enough thrust to safely take off again if the aircraft failed to grab the arresting hook.
