In fighter mode, the F/A-18 is used primarily as an escort aircraft and for fleet air defence; in attack mode, it is used for interdiction and air support.
The F/A-18 demonstrated its capabilities and versatility during Operation Desert Storm when it was able to shoot down enemy fighters and then bomb enemy targets in the same mission, breaking all records for tactical aircraft in terms of availability, reliability and maintainability.
The F/A-18C and D models are the result of a 1987 block upgrade that enables the use of modern missiles and jammers against enemy projectiles.
The C and D models delivered since 1989 also have an improved night attack capability.
Strike Fighter Squadron 27 (VFA-27), also known as the "Royal Maces". They belong to Carrier Air Squadron 5 and are assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Their tail code is NF.
