Its airframe inspired the eventual introduction of the F-5E Tiger II in the early 1970s.
Equipped with two new J85-GE-21 engines, which were able to deliver significantly higher power and thrust than the previous version, it was characterized by a longer and enlarged fuselage.
Improved flight performance due to the new aerodynamic layout, increased range and updated avionics enabled the Tiger II to be successfully deployed by numerous air forces.
Basic armament consisted of two 20 mm cannons installed in the bow at the bottom of the hull, supplemented by the ability to employ a wide range of air-to-air missiles.
However, in addition to its primary role as a fighter, it had extensive ground attack capabilities.
