The first RAF aircraft to fly faster than 500 mph, the Vampire was also the first single-engine jet to cross the Atlantic.
The FB.5 fighter-bomber was the most important variant of the aircraft.
1,123 aircraft were built, of which 930 were in service with the Royal Air Force - those intended for overseas service were designated FB.9 and had air conditioning in the cockpit.
