Its history began in the late 1950s and ended for some air forces in the mid-2000s.
Its unique airframe with its sleek fuselage and small wing area made this aircraft the ideal interceptor.
Thanks to the thrust of its General Electric J79-GE-11A afterburning turbojet engine, it could reach a speed of Mach 2.2 and had an excellent climb rate.
However, it was not very maneuverable and difficult to fly.
On January 13, 1967, four ROCAF F-104Gs attacked a formation of J-6/ MiG-19s of the People's Liberation Army Air Force over the disputed island of Kinmen. They managed to shoot down two MiG-19s.
One F-104 did not return to base and its pilot was reported missing.
