The navigation turntable was developed for the Luftwaffe during World War II to assist maintenance personnel in calibrating navigation instruments in aircraft.
The wooden structure was set up on maintenance airfields to enable mechanics to calibrate the aircraft's compasses and gyroscopes to correspond exactly with the charts and true, not magnetic, north.
This was done by placing the aircraft in a horizontal position and rotating the entire unit with the aircraft until all compasses matched.
