The P-322 was used by the USAAF as a model for a future high-altitude fighter after the RAF cancelled its order for 667 P-38 Lightnings in 1942.
This order was originally initiated by the French, who wanted a simplified low-altitude fighter variant of this aircraft without the turbo-superchargers used on all later P-38s.
