The development of the Morane Saulnier MS.406 began in 1934, the first prototype took off on August 8, 1935.
It was powered by a Hispano Suiza HS 12Ygrs engine, another prototype from 1937 had an HS 12Ycrs engine.
Series production did not start until early 1939.
Production was quite fast, on September 1, 1939 the French Air Force had 572 of this aircraft type.
Due to the shortage of Hispano Suiza HS engines manufactured in France, licensed engines from Switzerland and Czechoslovakia (Avia) were also adopted.
During service the aircraft showed some defects, in particular a low ammunition supply and problems with the engine cooling.
As a result, modernization began and the aircraft were given the name MS.410.
