The Yak-1 was the first fighter aircraft developed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau and made its first flight on January 13, 1940.
The aircraft was of mixed construction with wooden wings and tips and a truss fuselage made of steel tubes covered with canvas.
The fighter was well armed with a 20 mm Shvak cannon and two synchronized 7.62 mm Shkas machine guns mounted above the engine.
The Yak-1 was the most successful of the new pre-war generation of Soviet production fighters (MiG-3, LaGG-3 and Yak-1), combining good flight data with simple controls.
Yak-1 fighters fought on all Soviet fronts of World War II and made a significant contribution to the fight against the German Luftwaffe and its allies during the most difficult period of the war.
