The F4F-4 entered service in 1942.
This aircraft featured a folding wing for efficient use on flight decks.
It carried six 12.7mm machine guns instead of four.
With its robust airframe and pilot tactics, the F4F-F was more than a match for the Zero fighter.
The Wildcat was also used by the Royal Navy and was known as the Martlet (fictional bird often seen in English coats of arms). This aircraft continued to be used for anti-submarine patrol and convoy escort until the end of the war.
