The Supermarine Spitfire is considered one of the most famous combat aircraft in aviation history and an "icon" of British aviation production.
The well-armed, single-engine, low-wing monoplane, along with the Hawker Hurricane, formed the backbone of the Royal Air Force's fighter units used against the German Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain.
