The well-armed, single-engine, low-wing monoplane, along with the Hawker Hurricane, formed the backbone of the Royal Air Force's fighter units used against the German Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire's success helped cement its status as a legendary aircraft. It was celebrated for its elliptical wing design and powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.
During the war, the Spitfire itself underwent constant development in its aerodynamic configuration and engine in response to the Luftwaffe's technological innovations, which led to the development of the formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190.
The Spitfire Mk IX was able to compete on equal terms with the most advanced German fighters of the time and was produced in sufficient numbers to meet requirements.
