The Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" has a remarkable legacy: it was both a strategic weapon and a lasting symbol of American air power during World War II. Designed as a large, multi-engine bomber with significant defensive armament, the B-17 was introduced in 1938. The RAF's first combat use in 1941, bombing raids over France, indicated improved defenses and greater accuracy. Later variants, such as the B-17G, were more effective and gradually evolved into powerful strategic weapons capable of high-altitude, long-range attacks. Despite heavy defensive armament, B-17 fighters continued to suffer from enemy attack.
