When its XB-24 prototype took flight on December 29, 1939, the aircraft was visually quite different from the B-17 Flying Fortress. With its shoulder-mounted, thin wings, low but narrow fuselage, and twin-boom tail, it resembled a seaplane.
After its introduction into the USAAF in 1941, the B-24 Liberator was produced in large numbers, saw service in all theaters of World War II, and made a significant contribution to the Allied war effort.
