The B-25 served in every theater of operations and was the most versatile aircraft of its kind, performing a variety of tactical tasks in many different operational environments.
Perhaps the most famous action involving the North American B-25 Mitchell occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on April 18, 1942, when sixteen of the bombers took off from the relatively short deck of the USS Hornet and headed for Japan. This bold and heroic attack was intended as a blow to the heart of the Japanese Empire, which had infamously attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, and demonstrated the determination of the American people and the resolve of its armed forces to pursue victory.
The early B-25B aircraft used in the Doolittle Raid performed well, but were already in the modernization phase.
The later C/D model (different letters were used to indicate the manufacturer) proved to be the final version of this highly effective medium bomber and was the first truly mass-produced version of the aircraft.
A highly robust and versatile aircraft, the Mitchell was used as a submarine patrol aircraft off the coast of Florida and as an attack bomber in the deserts of North Africa, proving successful in both cases.
Some of the later versions of the B-25 became the most heavily armed aircraft of the war, with as many as 18 machine guns and a variety of other attack weapons.
With a nose that housed eight heavy cannons, these aircraft were deadly fighting machines capable of destroying anything in their line of fire.
