The Netherlands urgently needed modern fighter aircraft and ordered 18 Douglas 8A-3Ns (developed as Northrop A-17s) in 1939, which were delivered by the end of the year.
Most of these aircraft, which were used as fighters, were destroyed by Luftwaffe attacks on the first day of the German invasion, 10 May 1940.
