The development of the new aircraft began in 1941 and in May 1942 the first prototype took off.
It reached a speed of 628 km/h.
The new wing carried a new undercarriage retracted towards the wing tips and two 20mm cannons, which together with another in the engine block and two 12.7mm machine guns above the engine formed an impressive armament.
In February the Italian government ordered a pilot series of 18 units and then 750 units, but in a situation where this was already unrealistic.
The second prototype, tested by the Germans since spring 1943, reached a speed of 720 km/h and flew to Romania, where it was integrated into the anti-aircraft defense of the oil fields.
The RE.2005's own deliveries began in May 1943, using licensed Fiat RA.1050 RC-58 engines of 1475 hp. After the Italian surrender, parts seized from the Germans were manufactured, with several aircraft serving with Berlin's air defense units.
