It entered service in 1936 and was characterised by a metal frame and retractable running gear.
The aircraft, which was modern and fast for its time, was used by the "Aviazione Legionaria" and experienced its baptism of fire in 1937 in the Spanish Civil War.
In September 1940, the "Corpo Aereo Italiano", consisting of the 13th and 43rd "Stormo da Bombardamento", was also equipped with the BR 20. The "Stormi" were stationed in Belgium and supported the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain.
Despite the fact that the modern fighters of the Royal Air Force showed the limitations of the BR-20, it was used by several bomber squadrons of the Regia Aeronautica on various fronts throughout the Second World War.
