She was stylishly designed from an aerodynamic point of view and was equipped with the powerful German DB 601 engine, manufactured under license by the Italian aviation industry.
The aircraft's engine and general flight performance provided the Regia Aeronautica with a fighter capable of combating Allied fighters.
Flight performance was actually much better compared to the previous generation of radial engine-equipped fighters, such as the Fiat G.50 and Macchi Mc.200.
It was maneuverable and fast (it could reach a speed of 600 km/h) and in the early versions was armed with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns in the bow.
Only in later versions was the armament improved by installing additional machine guns in the wings.
