It was originally developed for Lufthansa and then entered military use when the war began. The BV222 was used for the long-distance transfer of goods and troops. A total of 13 examples were built, none of which have survived to this day. In June 1944, all BV222s were transferred to Norway, where they were captured by British troops after the war.
