The Stuka first flew in 1935 and made its combat debut in 1936 as part of the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War.
The aircraft was easily recognizable by its gull wings and fixed landing gear.
The Stuka's design incorporated several innovative features, including automatic dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the aircraft would recover during its dive, even if the pilot became unconscious due to the acceleration.
It soon became a symbol of the German “Blitzkrieg” in the first phase of World War II, providing air support for the Wehrmacht’s tank divisions.
It was used by the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain, where it showed its weaknesses compared to the faster and well-armed modern fighters such as the Hurricane and Spitfire.
