The Luftwaffe was pleased with this new variant.
The P-2 had its cameras installed in the bomb bay and was immediately used on reconnaissance missions over England at altitudes of 12,500m.
During this time they remained completely undetected. Due to the altitude at which they could fly, the Ju86Ps were immune to fighter attacks.
Until a specially modified Spitfire Mk V shot down a plane north of Cairo, Egypt.
A single rear-firing machine gun was quickly installed, but this did not prevent two more planes from being shot down. In 1943, the Ju 86Ps were withdrawn from service. Converted from the P variant, the Ju 86R-1 was the next reconnaissance model. With a wingspan of 32m, it could reach an altitude of 14,400m. This variant was equipped with only two cameras.
