The Luftwaffe was satisfied with this new variant.
The P-2 had its cameras installed in the bomb bay and was immediately deployed on reconnaissance missions over England at altitudes of 40,000 feet.
During this time they went completely undetected. Because of the altitude at which they could fly, the Ju86Ps were immune to fighter attacks.
Until a specially modified Spitfire Mk V shot down a plane north of Cairo in Egypt.
A single rear-firing machine gun was quickly installed, but this did not prevent two more aircraft from being shot down. In 1943 the Ju 86Ps were withdrawn from service. Converted from the P variant, the Ju 86R-1 was the next reconnaissance model. With a wingspan of 32 m, it could reach a height of 14400 m. This variant was equipped with only two cameras.
