This distinctive "gull-wing" aircraft rose to fame in the early stages of the war when Germany enjoyed virtual air superiority.
The Stuka's design included several innovative features, including automatic dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the aircraft recovered from its dive attack even if the pilot blacked out due to acceleration.
It soon became a symbol of the German "Blitzkrieg" in the first phase of World War II, providing air support for the Wehrmacht's Panzer divisions.
Used extensively by the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain, where it showed its weaknesses compared to the faster and well-armed modern fighters such as the Hurricane and Spitfire
