The Messcherschmitt Me163 "Komet" was the only operational rocket-powered fighter aircraft in World War II. The Me 163 "A" project, codenamed "Project X", started in 1937 under Dr. Alexander Lippisch.
It was produced as an interceptor with rocket engines.
The first Me 163 flew in 1941, but there were problems with fuel consumption and the engine that limited its range.
From August 1943, the Me 163 B was developed as an improved version.
Production began in July 1944 and a total of 279 examples were delivered to the Luftwaffe.
