The aircraft entered service two years later than planned in 1943 as a replacement for the Me 210 and featured several distinctive features, including twin-gun barbettes.
The Me 410 was essentially a development of the 210 with a lengthened fuselage, revised wings and more powerful engines. Although she performed well, she entered service too late to have any impact on the course of the war and was soon relegated to the reconnaissance role.
Today only one complete example of a Messerschmitt Me 410 remains, which is on display at the Royal Air Force Museum at RAF Cosford in the Midlands.
Production of the Messerschmitt Me 410 ended in August 1944 when production lines were converted to producing single-engine Messerschmitt Bf 109G fighters for homeland defense use.
At this point in the war, however, things were already looking pretty hopeless for the Luftwaffe.
