In the 1930s, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) relied mainly on aircraft manufactured in the United States and Great Britain.
The situation changed with the start of the Second World War.
After the defeat of France in Europe, Thailand decided to seize the moment and retake its territories in French Indochina.
An order was placed for the delivery of new American aircraft.
However, the USA felt that strengthening the Thai air force could change the situation in the region in a direction undesirable to them and refused to supply the aircraft.
Thailand turned to Japan, which soon delivered several dozen bombers for the RTAF.
Among them were nine of the company's Ki-21-Ia , which were added to the inventory of Kong Bin Koi 6 (6th Air Squadron) in the spring of 1941.
These aircraft did not have time to take part in the fighting against France, but were used against units of the Chinese National Army in Burma in the spring of 1942.
After the Chinese forces withdrew to their territory, the Thai Ki-21-Ia were used for patrol and reconnaissance flights for a while.
Later they served as training and transport aircraft.
