From the production of the AS.1 Tern glider and a series of multi-engine aircraft, the designers came up with the machine called the AS6 Envoy.
This aircraft type was practically based on the predecessor Airspeed AS5 Courier. At this time, however, the company was already based in Portsmouth.
The Envoy, named "Gabrielle", belonged to Maxwell H. Findlay and Ken H. F. Waller, who took part in the 1936 "Schlesinger Trophy" between Portsmouth and Johannesburg.
When taking off from Abercorn, Northern Rhodesia, the twin-engine aircraft got out of control and crashed in the bush.
The pilot Max Findlay and the radio operator A. H. Morgan were killed. Cpt. Findlay DSC, DFC was a Scottish flying ace of the First World War who achieved 14 aerial victories.
After the war, he stayed with the RAF for several years before embarking on a civilian career as a pilot, which ended with his death at the Schlesinger Air Race.
