When those in charge of the 1956 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition were looking for a suitable reconnaissance and support aircraft, they knew exactly who to turn to, for Auster Aircraft Company is renowned as an exceptional aerial observation aircraft with great short-range performance.
Auster Aircraft Company was asked to modify two of their twin-engined T.7 aircraft specifically for the task, with additional radio equipment, larger tail surfaces and the ability to be fitted with floats or skis as required.
The aircraft were also painted in a high visibility scheme to prepare them for the conditions expected during an expedition that it was hoped would lead to the first overland crossing of Antarctica via the South Pole.
