The 'Commando' was a major variant of the Sea King and was well suited to amphibious warfare and tactical deployment of ground troops.
It was originally proposed as a tactical transport helicopter for the Egyptian Air Force, which did not require the amphibious capability of earlier Sea Kings, so the side floats were removed.
With folding rotors and tail, the Commando entered service with the Royal Navy as the Sea King HC.4.
It was eventually fitted with radar warning and infrared jamming equipment, and could also use M130/M147 flares as countermeasures.
As well as troops, it could also carry sub-loads of up to 2.5 tonnes.
The longer range and a capacity of 28 troops made it ideal as an amphibious transport helicopter, and the HC.4 saw service in the Falklands, Balkans, Gulf, Lebanon and Afghanistan conflicts.
