The Boeing E-3G AEW&C Sentry / AWACS is one of many military adaptations of the legendary Boeing 707 airliner. Introduced in 1977, the E-3 underwent regular improvements throughout its lifespan.
The inventory of radars, sensors and computers can track hundreds of air targets simultaneously, providing real-time command and control in combat situations.
The E-3 is expected to remain in frontline service until 2027 and will then be replaced by the Boeing E-7.
