The SAAB J-21A was developed and manufactured during World War II and was powered by a DB605 piston engine.
In the post-war years, however, the type was further revised and fitted with a jet engine.
This resulted in the J-21R variant, which became the very first jet aircraft of Swedish design.
The SAAB J-21R was used as a fighter, while the ground attack version was designated the A-21R.
These aircraft could carry unguided rocket projectiles or a machine gun pod under the belly.
